Optical and technical properties of color pigments
Durable and vibrant colors cannot be taken for granted. Organic and inorganic pigments give paints and coatings their radiant colors and make objects look their best. Furthermore, high-quality pigments are able to protect items and help them withstand even the most demanding of conditions.
Whether it's printing inks or industrial paints - organic and inorganic color pigments are able to bring radiance and vibrancy to virtually any surface – be it plastics, textile or other kinds of materials.
As a leading supplier of specialty chemicals, TER Chemicals works with highly reliable manufacturers to deliver premium products for your needs.
Color pigments are divided into two broad categories: organic and inorganic.
Inorganic pigments include oxides, sulfides and other chemical compounds that are highly insoluble. Most inorganic pigments, such as zinc oxide and cobalt blue, are made synthetically. Nevertheless, there are also naturally occurring inorganic pigments, for example iron oxide yellow, which is used in many different varnishes. Iron oxides are quite possibly the most important type of oxide pigments because their color spectrum, which ranges from yellow to orange to black, pigment red, and covers all colors and mixed colors.
Inorganic pigments are generally less vibrant and lighter in color than their organic counterparts.
The latter group consists of complex compounds with organic ligands as well as other molecules. Organic pigments can be extracted from natural sources or produced synthetically.
Natural pigments are extracted from plants or animals. Some of the most well-known examples include indigo, chlorophyll, henna, ultramarine and wood extracts. Natural organic pigments can either be independent or form complexes with carbohydrate or protein molecules.
Synthetic pigments are made artificially, meaning that they can be designed to cover a wide range of colors and shades. Some examples includes azo pigments and polycyclic pigments.

One distinguishing feature of pigments is their insolubility in the application medium. This gives them properties that are vastly superior to those of conventional dyes.
Due to their optimized weather and light fastness, pigments are often used in the automotive industry. Crystalline effects are responsible for the improvement to the properties. The effects are caused by the formation of hydrogen bridges and the resulting interactions.
Inorganic pigments are around ten times larger than their organic counterparts.
Color intensity is determined by the size of the pigments crystalline particles. The smaller the particles, the more vibrant the color. Increasing the particle size will slightly alter the shade of a color. In this regard, light-scattering properties, covering power and absorption behavior play a significant role in determining how pigments look and whether they are colored, black or white.
Colour pigments absorb a portion of visible light and reflect the rest. They thus assume the complementary color to the wavelengths absorbed by them.

Color pigments are used in a wide range of applications, whenever a product's appearance needs to be adjusted. These include rubber, paints, printing inks, industrial paints, adhesives and sealants, construction chemicals and many more.
Pigments are used by manufacturers to color many different materials in a wide range of industries.
High-quality paints and coatings are immediately recognizable, in particular, by their high color intensity and covering power. However, perfect colourant does not just give a surface an exceptional appearance. The use of high-quality pigments can also optimize an object's physical properties.
Organic color pigments are mainly used in printing inks and other coatings industries. Even solvents and highly aqueous solutions (such as inks) can become exceptionally vibrant through the addition of pigments.
On the other hand, inorganic color pigments are predominantly used in paints and varnishes. These pigments do not just increase color intensity, but also optimize the physical properties of a material's surface. They make paints and varnishes more resistant to extreme weather conditions, UV radiation, chemicals and high temperatures. The improvement to the durability and fastness means that paints can maintain their color intensity, vibrancy and hiding power for a long time. Inorganic pigments are therefore very well suited for use in all kinds of interior and exterior paints.
