Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth - Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all

As a global company, our sustainability strategy aims to secure our long-term existence and always encompasses economic growth to provide long-term employment. Sourcing sustainable products, innovative solutions and promoting a responsible supply chain are crucial aspects to this growth and contribute to improve the quality of life of people worldwide.

In 2021, we joined the UN Global Compact – an international initiative for responsible corporate governance. Besides environmental protection and fair competition, we commit ourselves to comply with international human rights and the labor standards of the International Labor Organization and to publish an annual report on our progress.

We are committed to taking responsibility for our activities along the supply chain and maintaining the highest standards of business ethics, integrity and principles of the UNGC and of the Responsible Care Charter. These principles and our expectations to our business partners are combined in our Supplier Code of Conduct.

TER Chemicals contributes to the following sub-goals of the 8th SDG:

  • Achieve higher levels of economic productivity through diversification, technological upgrading and innovation, including by focusing on value-added and labor-intensive sectors
  • Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and promote the formalisation and growth of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services
  • Achieve full employment and productive, decent work for all women and men, including young people and people with disabilities, as well as equal pay for work of equal value
  • Protect labor rights and promoting a safe working environment for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular migrant workers, and workers in precarious employment

Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

Sustainable industries based on innovation, circular economy and optimal infrastructure support dynamic and competitive economies that generate employment and income.

Together with our partner companies, we invest in research and development for innovative products to enable the efficient use of resources through circular economy. We apply digital solutions and process automation and facilitate international trade as part of our responsibility.

As a member of the Responsible Care initiative, we support the continuous improvement of the chemical industry in the areas of environment, safety and health beyond legal requirements and regulations.

In particular, our activities can contribute to the following sub-objective:

  • Upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally friendly technologies and industrial processes, with all countries taking action according to their respective capabilities

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Worldwide consumption and production as the driving force of the global economy are based on the use of natural resources. Environmentally friendly products such as biodegradable plastics or natural waxes help to improve the use of these natural resources. To reduce the lifecycle impacts of consumption and to preserve natural resources, it is also important to keep the available resources in use for as long as possible. The circular economy helps to minimize waste and create value with renewable resources.

  • Significantly reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse

Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle

Goal 13: Climate Action – Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts:

Climate change is an increasing challenge for the international community. In the Paris Climate Agreement, countries have set themselves the goal of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius as far as possible. As a company, we also support the climate goals in our business area:

Innovation is the driver towards a zero-carbon economy. Investing in the sustainable portfolio to decrease the carbon footprint of products and reduce downstream emissions along the supply chain are key contributions to achieving this SDG. In addition to reducing our own emissions and taking compensatory measures, we research alternative solutions together with our partners and conduct an open dialogue.

TER Chemicals participates in the global Carbon Disclosure Project. In order to create transparency and identify opportunities for improvement, we voluntarily report our data and information on emissions and climate.

We can contribute to the following sub-goals of the 13th SDGs:

  • Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning
  • Improve education, raise awareness among individuals and institutional capacities for climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning

Goal 14: Life below Water - Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

The world's oceans cover 70% of our planet. They regulate weather, climate and rainwater and drinking water and also provide important sources for food and feed.

Sustainable chemicals such as biodegradable plastics or green water treatment, as well as sustainable supply chains, play a very important role in protecting the oceans and reducing marine pollution and waste. Thus, the business of TER Chemicals can contribute to the following sub-target:

  • Prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of any kind, especially from land-based activities including marine litter and nutrient pollution

For transparency and responsible handling of our products

SUSTAINABLE

SUPPLY CHAIN

Every stage of a product's life cycle has an impact on the environment, society and the economy. Hence, ensuring appropriate business practices, product stewardship and transparency along the value chain is essential for TER Chemicals.

As a chemical distributor, we are aware of our special role and due diligence in achieving a responsible supply chain and actively contribute to this by ensuring sustainable practices throughout the life cycle of the products and services we offer.

We want to place particular focus on compliance with human rights and internationally recognized labor standards along our supply chain and in the selection process together with our business partners. Our expectations and the principles of the UNGC and the Responsible Care Charter are core elements of our Supplier Code of Conduct.

We apply certified quality and compliance standards for ourselves and our partners, provide conclusive documentation and ensure safety in the workplace and for the environment along the supply chain. In our pursuit of a resource-saving circular economy, we strive to reduce waste and energy consumption and introduce recyclable products. We promote local sourcing to avoid long delivery routes and minimize water pollution, but we are also exploring alternative transportation options such as trains and e-trucks for our goods. In this way, we support the environmentally friendly supply chain and the following SDGs of the United Nations.

While we are taking steps to reduce our emissions and conserve energy to achieve the 1.5° C goal of climate neutrality, we also recognize the carbon footprint we are leaving behind today. By supporting selected projects such as the ADPML Portel-Para REDD project and VPL's biomass-based electricity project, we offset our CO2 emissions and support activities at the source of our products.
