Do you use wax?

The term "waxes" refers to a number of substances of different chemical nature. These products offer a vast variety of distinct properties which are useful in literally hundreds of applications. Waxes have a long history and were used in ancient Egypt already to make paints. Today we distinguish between natural, partially and fully synthetic waxes. A few exciting examples we would like to introduce to you below.

New family members in the VESTOWAX® and TERWAX range

Expansion of our Fischer-Tropsch Product Portfolio

With VESTOWAX® H 2000 MG we introduce a Fischer-Tropsch hard paraffin coarse powder offering a particle size of at least 99% below 1.000 µm. It was developed specifically for the usage as external PVC- Lubricant and allows to produce PVC one packs, which effects a high surface gloss on final PVC parts (e. g. window profiles), while lowering the current energy input and avoids partial overheating during processing. Another benefit is the easy miscibility with other components of PVC One-Packs produced by dry-blending or compacting.

TERWAX 85 is a medium melting Fischer-Tropsch hard paraffin being used in Hotmelt Adhesives with lower application temperature, so called Warm-Melts. It helps to adjust the viscosity and setting time and improves the wetting of substrates. Based on the specification values this product is in accordance with the Plastic Regulation (EU) No 10/2011: FCM 94 and can therefore be used in “Warm-Melts” and Coatings of articles with contact to fatty food.

Addition of TERWAX EBS (Ethylen-Bis-Stearamide) to our Wax range

TERWAX EBS is a fatty acid amide wax suitable for asphalt modification (polymer modified bitumen) and acts as a Lubrication and Release Agent for thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics. Further use as dispersant of pigments in Masterbatches coloring different plastics (e. g. ABS, PS, PES, PE, PP). It is also suitable to produce masterbatches with very low pigment particle size to color synthetic fibres (e. g. PP, PET).

Licocare – possible alternatives to montan wax

Montan waxes have been used successfully in many different applications for decades. However, their origin in finite fossil resources and dependence on a single supply source increasingly lead to availability problems, extended lead times, and rising prices. Our partner Clariant recognized this issue early on and developed alternatives based on rice bran, a renewable and sustainable raw material that is also non-food competitive. The products, known under the Licocare brand, have similar specifications to montan waxes and even outperform them in certain applications. An ideal step toward greater sustainability and supply security.

Wax and polymer dispersions – powerful and versatile additives

Waxes and polymers finely dispersed in aqueous medium play an important role in many formulations. As stain- and water-repellent additives in shoe polishes, as release agent both in the technical and in the food industry, or in coatings to improve scratch and mar resistance or corrosion protection: In many applications wax and polymer dispersions make the required performance possible in the first place.

With Albicera PA12, we now offer a new product that significantly improves lubrication and slip properties in water-based systems while providing a sustainable alternative to perfluorinated additives (PFAS). We have the right wax and polymer dispersions for your applications – please contact us for more details.

Waxes – an eco-friendly alternative for PFAS

PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) is a hot topic these days due to tightening restrictions. The majority of PFAS are persistent in the environment leading to accumulation with potential toxic effects. Due to their unique desirable properties such as stability under intense heat, they have been used widely in many industries. In some applications such as printing & packaging inks, powder and metal coatings, waxes can work as viable & sustainable replacement, partly even with lower dosage levels and improved rub resistance, matting and gloss adjustment performance.
